The Protege

And then, just when I thought I was getting good at hoops, along comes this guy.

At only 2, he can legitimately dribble the ball...

And then out at Papa's last weekend, this happened.

By the way, love Papa's reaction. Though in all seriousness, that was a pretty sweet jump shot from 4-5 feet out, and I'd have to say after two weeks of hoops camp they would be pretty impressed with his form.

Christmas Week

So the days leading up to Christmas were a lot of activity around our house, minus Dad who caught the flu; but we kept things rolling.

Started out making some Christmas cookies.

While the cookies baked Mae decided to memorize The Joy of Cooking, a la Will Hunting.

Then we decorated them.

Oh, and I decorated paper to use as our Christmas present paper for Nana and Papa.

Next post will be some rockin photos from Christmas Eve and Christmas morn'.

Life in the Big City

What have I been up to? Welllllll...

Went to my first football game - this one was a Nebraska/Northwestern showdown up in Evanston. The game was awesome. Well, maybe that's an overstatement - the game was fine, the gigantic bag of popcorn accompanied by a large cup of fresh-squeezed lemonade was awesome. Dad and I had a blast.

Been hanging at Nana's and playing some ball with Papa in the backyard.

I have a best friend at school. We went on a field trip and spent the entire day joined at the hip. Her name is Nadia.

As always, spending loads of quality time (and loads of not-so-quality time) with Mabel Jane, often in my Polar Bear hat if the weather permits.

And went to Dad's work the other night to pick something up. He asked me if I wanted to take the elevator or walk up the 170 stairs to his office. Two roads diverged in the woods and I... took the stairs. Mission accomplished.

Grandparents Day

So last Friday was Grandparents Day at my school and Nana and Papa came down for the festivities.

No, that guy on the steps with me is my Papa, not the old codger walking along the sidewalk in the blue blockers.

First, we went to church for a mass specially put on for our grandparents. Then we went back to the classroom for some activities.

Then we got out early and I took Nana and Papa to West Town Bakery, which is  my favorite breakfast place. We had some pancakes and what not and then I watched as they baked cakes... chocolate... ahhhhhh.

Grocery Shopping

Mabel here. Yep, Fin's still sleeping and Dad is in the kitchen making my breakfast... last night when he put in his password I faked like I wasn't paying attention (really, Dad, Bulls23 is your password? That is so 1996).

Anyway, the other day we got home and there were a bunch of bags in the kitchen, hmmmm, what could be in here?

Shiny... red... maybe it's a cupcake?

Whatever it is, it sure looks tasty...

Not a cupcake

Well, the only other thing in here is flour and capers so a girl's gotta do...

And hey, can someone email me if they find out what this yellow thing is. I just don't get it. Finley sits on it and then everyone claps...

Maybe if I sit on it...
No response, maybe I'm supposed to stand in it...
Again... nothin. Well, let me know if you know what it is and what I'm supposed to do with it.

Okay, before I go, I've got a pretty long narrative here but I think it might be worth reading. The other day we were at Nana's but she had to run somewhere so we were alone with Papa (I know, right?). So Dad calls and here is the conversation that ensues:

Dad: Hey Papa, how are the girls?
Papa: Well, they just got up but we've got a problem here - Mae has poop
Dad: Alright, Papa, well, get on it. Call me back when you're done.

Here's the funny part. My cousin Hannah is 12 years old and there have been six more grandchildren after her. And Papa has not changed one poop diaper in 12 years... until now.

So about ten minutes goes by and I know Dad's at work getting a little nervous, and then Papa calls him back.

Dad: So, Papa, how'd it go?
Papa: Well, it went south pretty quickly. I was ripping the back of the wipes bag open til Fin came over and showed me how to open it and get them out. And then I put on her diaper and thought, "Wow, that's really a big diaper for her" and then Fin told me that was her pull-up and she went in the bag and got Mae's diaper.
Dad: So what you're telling me is that you're there with the girls but Mae is pretty much in Finley's care.
Papa: Well, I wouldn't go that far.
Dad (thinking): I would.
Dad: Okay, so Mabel needs to eat now.
Papa: Well, what does she eat?
Dad: Get Fin, go to the fridge, open it and show her all the things that are in there. She will tell you what Mae can eat and how she eats it.
Papa: Alrighty, then.

Now I hope that didn't paint Papa as a bad babysitter, because he's actually pretty good. He gives all the hugs and carries me around and puts on music for us, but when it comes to the technicalities like poop diapers, let's just say thank goodness for Finley's Sister Patrol.

Vacation Pictures

So we got back from Hilton Head late Sunday night. We had an hour and 45-minute flight delay and I kind of lost my temper towards the end. Then again, Dad kind of lost his, too, and he looked a little sillier than I did.

Anyway, enough of that malarkey, here are some photos from Hilton Head. We had a great time, eight days on Hilton Head Island just living it up. We had two 2-bedroom condos - Mom, Dad and I were in one with Uncle Brian, Aunt Tasha, Isaiah and Eli, and Nana & Papa shared a Condo with Uncle Kenny, Aunt Suzie, Hannah, Luke and Sophie (also known as The Soph Dog).

If you're wondering how the week went with the family, here is a snapshot of it. This is Eli, who was my roommate for a week, and, yes, that is a diaper on his head.
I got completely off my sleep schedule and had no idea what the difference between night and day was... needless to say Dad and I had frequent 3am and 4am play times, which was fun for me, but he may have a different take. (Editor's Note: Dad does not have a different take. He honestly loved the middle-of-the-night play time, too). My life became a series of 3-hour naps and I never knew where I'd wake up - the beach, the pool, the condo, Piggly Wiggly (the grocery store)... it was fantastic.

The weather was great - in the 90s and sunny every day, and we spent a lot of time at the pool and beach.

When my Uncle Brian gets home I'll post more photos because he took a bunch of good ones, but for now this is what I've got.

Here's me hanging out with Dad at the pool, having a good ol' time.
Here's me after the pool in my post-swimming jumper, very comfy.
One night Mom and Dad went out to dinner and I stayed home with Nana, Papa and all my cousins. This is Papa and me having a laugh. Oh, and his hair isn't always that out of control, just one of those hair days for Papa.
Here's Mom, Dad and me when they got back. Mom was lookin pretty cute in her dress. Dad was in pants that weren't even ironed... as usual.
And here's a picture of me at the ocean for the first time. I absolutely LOVED the ocean at night with the wind blowing and my feet in the water. I often just sat in the Bjorn giggling.
Well, that's it for now, I'll have more photos early next week. This week it's just good to be back home where Mom, Dad and I are back in the swing of things, but are still in that vacation state of mind.
